Like many other NRIs, my family took advantage of the long American academic summers to decamp to India and visit loved ones. I’m half Malayali, quarter Bengali, and a quarter Kashmiri, so I’m fortunate to have pockets of relatives sprinkled fairly liberally over the country. The bulk of these blissful summer months were spent in my maternal home in Kolkata, where as a barely pubescent teenager I learned the joy of the siesta.
