Creating, Collecting And Living With Masterpieces
Where art meets architecture is a fine line perhaps best glimpsed in the work of Bijoy Jain—in his quiet, meticulously crafted houses; in his organic wall hangings made from bamboo, lime and pigments (pictured left, available from Chemould Prescott Road); and in his sculptural installations made of tiny handmade bricks, some of which will be exhibited at the second edition of the Jaipur Sculpture Park (opening 9 December). His thinking isn’t confined to a single medium but is instead based on artistic collaborations. And that’s the idea we’ve tried to capture in this, the most collectible edition yet of The Art Issue.
THE EXPERIMENTERS
A heritage building in Kolkata’s Ballygunge Place became the canvas on which gallerists Priyanka and Prateek Raja drew up their plans for the second Experimenter space and its cutting-edge programmeWRITER MAANYA SACHDEVA
When they opened their gallery in 2009 in Kolkata, Priyanka and Prateek Raja envisioned it as an ambitious, experimental space that turned the spotlight on pioneers. “It has always been for artists who are pushing the boundaries of contemporary art and reimagining the way we view the world,” the gallerists say. So, their decision to open a second space was met with a lot of optimism from patrons of the Hindusthan Road gallery; clearly, progressive South Asian art was thriving. Indeed, this second space was born out of a need to expand their programme and dedicate a more active space to learning.

The Curator
AD’s Art issue would be incomplete without an essay on Peggy Guggenheim, the philanthropist and visionary who was collecting through the war years, and whose home-turned-museum in Venice has one of the most important holdings of modern art in the world.
