CELTIC Football Club is a name known throughout the football world, while in just about any country you care to mention, you’re guaranteed to find Celtic supporters proudly wearing the green and white Hoops.
And as well as having universal appeal, the Celtic first-team squad has a global look to it, with players from 13 countries playing their part in the historic success the club has enjoyed in recent seasons.
Over the course of this season we’ll be taking a closer look at these countries and their current Celtic links, as well as other nations who have played their part in our unique story. This week it’s Australia…
AND IF YOU KNOW THE HISTORY
Celtic have travelled to Australia on five occasions. Their first trip was back in 1977 for the World of Soccer Cup. The Hoops made it to the final of the friendly tournament. They beat a Singapore XI 5-0 in the semi-final but Jock Stein’s team lost 3-1 against Red Star Belgrade in the final. It was 32 years later Celtic that returned to Australia in 2009 to play in the Translink Cup (Roar Against Racism Trophy), beating A-league side Brisbane Roar 3-0, which happened to be Tony Mowbray’s first game in charge of Celtic. The Bhoys have also spent three pre-seasons in Australia, firstly in 2011 where they won both friendlies against A-league teams, Perth Glory and Melbourne Victory. They also travelled back over to Australia in 2013 and 2014 for pre-season preparations.
