The Last Word With Joe Sullivan
I WAS saddened to learn on Monday that former Celt, Paul Wilson had passed away at the age of 66. For those of us of a certain age, we grew up watching the Quality Street Gang strut their stuff at various levels and for diverse lengths of time throughout the 1970s.
Some members left at the height of their Celtic fame to join other massive clubs down south, a few barely made the grade at all and some others produced the best of their football in the Hoops before moving on in what could be termed as the autumn of their careers.
Paul Wilson was firmly in the latter bracket – a wholehearted Celt with an eye for goal and a knack of finding the net in Glasgow derby games as well as scoring twice in the 1975 Scottish Cup final win.
He had this particular penchant for letting the ball go over his head, in a sort of ‘aerial dummy’ if you like, before turning and picking up the ball on the other side of the defender. It didn’t always come off, but when it did, the ball usually nestled in the back of the net.
Paul Wilson, one of the many members of that particular gang who displayed true quality.
WHAT’S the French for Quality Street Gang? I think it’s possibly Paris Saint-Germain going by what went down last Tuesday here at Celtic Park in the UEFA Champions League.
