Imagine That

Inspired by MercyMe’s hit song, I Can Only Imagine brings faith to the big screen.

WHEN SCOUTS FANNED out across the South seeking locations for the film I Can Only Imagine, Texas was high on their list. After all, the film—based on MercyMe’s breakout hit song—takes place in Greenville, Texas, where the band itself also is based. It made sense to film in the Lone Star State.

But Texas has eliminated its film rebate program. So the filmmakers turned their eyes north to the Sooner State and its rebates. Shooting here began in the fall of 2016.

“Oklahoma is beautiful in a lot of different ways,” says co-writer Jon Erwin, who also directed the film with his brother Andrew. “Typically, in some other places like New Mexico, you just get New Mexico—one look. But here, it’s very much west meets east. I’ve never seen this kind of diversity in locations.”
