THE FIRST THING visitors see when they enter this one-of-a-kind museum is a scene of the banjo’s humble beginnings. Inspired by the painting The Banjo Lesson by Henry Ossawa Tanner, a life-sized diorama shows an elderly man teaching his grandson to play an early version of what some consider the only true American instrument.
