What prompted you to become an interior illustrator/graphic designer?

I love telling stories. When I was at art school it became a habit for me to record things that interested me in my sketchbook. Drawing became my medium to express myself and it evolved into creating prints and patterns inspired by my travels, which ultimately was the concept behind Safomasi.

What is your specialisation?

Playful, figurative, illustrated prints that have a strong narrative and a colourful, yet refined palette.

Who are your icons and inspirations?

I really love the work of Josef Frank, in particular his use of scale and colour. His patterns are bold and joyful, they make me happy to look at!

The best thing that you have designed and is proud about?

I design pieces that have a personal story to me, but hope that others also feel a connection to them. My favourite products are those that spark a memory or emotion in other people. The Regatta Quilt with a sailing boat print is one such piece. I once had a really lovely email from a customer who had seen it in the window of a shop in New York and dropped everything - she had to buy it. She wrote how it touched her soul as it reminded her of a quilt her mother had made for her as a small child. I’m proud to make something that has that effect on someone.

What advice would you give to young self-starters?

Trends will come and go – so, focus on creating work that has substance beyond style. Develop a strong point of view and your own unique style.
