The Kala Ghoda art district in south Mumbai is home to some of the city’s most iconic heritage structures built in architectural genres including the Victorian Neo-Gothic, Indo-Saracenic, Edwardian Neo-Classical, Art Deco and Renaissance Revival.
These structures are home to some of the best art galleries and museums in India. In a bid to fostering cultural awareness, especially among those who do not have access to it, and preserving and celebrating these iconic structures, the Kala Ghoda Association was formed in 1998. Since the past two decades, the Kala Ghoda art district hosts an annual art festival that is organised in February by the aforementioned association. The Kala Ghoda Art Festival’s epynomous name is derived from that of the art district, which was home to a black stone equestrian statue of the former Prince of Wales, King Edward VII.
