The four ladies were photographed using a Canon EOS 5D Mark III body and a Canon 135mm f/1.8 lens. The subjects were originally photographed in colour and then the images were converted to black & white using Adobe Camera Raw and Photoshop.

The model was positioned in front of a dark grey seamless backdrop.
The Key light was a studio flash attached to a 135cm Octa soft box placed to the left of the camera and at a height a bit higher than the model. The light was aimed slightly down to light up the ‘broad side’ of the face while keeping the other side in comparative shadow. The Octa was turned towards the camera position so that only the ‘feathered’ light illuminated the model. The reason for turning the Octa towards the camera side (and not towards the backdrop) was to avoid the light from the Octa hitting the backdrop.
A ‘snoot’ attached to a studio light was placed behind the model and carefully pointed at the backdrop to provide a fine separation between the model and the backdrop.
