Art Protects the Planet

Splash And Burn

ONLY TWO WEEKS BEFORE TRUMP'S SHAMEFUL decision to withdraw the United States from the 2015 Paris climate change agreement, the world was introduced to Splash and Burn, an art-powered awareness campaign in Sumatra, Indonesia. The particular issues at hand are what you expect with massive unregulated farming techniques; trans boundary haze, deforestation, as well as human and animal displacement. While impact of the news is not universally impacted, some people are prepared to go out of their way to make a difference, while others can’t see beyond self-interest. Fully self-funded, the project was curated by Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic and coordinated by Charlotte Pyatt in association with the Sumatran Orangutan Society and Orangutan Information Centre (OIC). Planned over the course of two years, it was finally executed in secrecy in the first months of 2017, carefully avoiding the scrutiny of local, often corrupted officials. The result is a series of installations and public works created on actual location, exposing the devastating consequences of unregulated farming practices of palm oil in Indonesia, as well as uncovering the ignorance of the global community about the issue. The campaign produced works by such renowned artists as Ernest Zacharevic, Axel Void, Mark Jenkins, Pixel Pancho, Isaac Cordal, Strøk, Gabriel Pitcher and Bibichun.

We had a chance to chat with the mastermind of the whole operation, Ernest Zacharevic, about his first impressions since the campaign went public, as well as the organization’s plans for the future.

As I enter Shepard Fairey’s Los Angeles studio on a sunny October afternoon, a considerably large painting of Andy Warhol sits on an easel, eyes focused and looming directly over the shoulder of Fairey as he adds watercolor touches to a series of works on paper.
