The decision to shut the Grade II listed haunt, part of Sir Richard Branson&rsquo;s Virgin Limited Edition portfolio, was due to &ldquo;unpredictable market conditions and a challenge to remain profitable&rdquo;. The 85 staff were informed of the final decision last month after a period of consultation.The popular 1.5 acre creation is divided into three themed zones: a Spanish garden in Moorish style, with fountains,&nbsp;vine-covered&nbsp;walkways and mature&nbsp;Chusan&nbsp;palms, a Tudor-style garden with roses, lilies, lavender and wisteria, and an English woodland garden, with more than 30 species of trees, streams and garden ponds home to pintail ducks and four flamingos.Some of the large trees, rooted in just&nbsp;90cm&nbsp;(3ft) of soil, are from original plantings made over 60 years ago and protected by Tree Preservation Orders made in 1976.Originally known as Derry and Toms Roof Gardens, they were designed by renowned landscape and garden designer Ralph Hancock, opening in 1938 at a cost of &pound;25,000. Owned by Derry and Toms until 1973, they eventually became part of the Virgin group in&nbsp;1981,&nbsp;and hosted showbiz parties, award ceremonies&nbsp;and&nbsp;weddings. Although future plans for the upkeep of the gardens and care of the resident&nbsp;birdlife&nbsp;are unknown, a Virgin spokesperson said it remained a &ldquo;top priority&rdquo;.&ldquo;We are certain The Roof Gardens will continue to be one of London&rsquo;s most spectacular and extraordinary landmarks and look forward to seeing what&rsquo;s next for this beautiful venue,&rdquo; they said.
