CONVINCING REN&Eacute;E ZELLWEGER TO accept her first series-regular role was as easy as uttering the name Anne Bancroft. In fact, that&rsquo;s exactly what What/If creator Mike Kelley did when he first met the Bridget Jones actress: He asked the 50-year-old movie star to think back to the 1967 film The Graduate and imagine Bancroft, a.k.a. Mrs. Robinson, without a cocktail in her hand and a scowl on her face. &ldquo; &lsquo;What if she hadn&rsquo;t channeled her self-loathing into destructive choices?&rsquo; &rdquo; Zellweger recalls Kelley saying. &ldquo; &lsquo;What if she created something that gave her power and influence so that she could manipulate her environment? What would that look like?&rsquo; How could I say no to that?&rdquo; Fortunately, she didn&rsquo;t. On Netflix&rsquo;s What/If, Zellweger plays the formidable Anne Montgomery, a venture capitalist who agrees to fully fund a promising inventor named Lisa (Castle Rock&rsquo;s Jane Levy, who also stars on NBC&rsquo;s upcoming drama Zoey&rsquo;s Extraordinary Playlist) if she can have a no-questions-asked night with Lisa&rsquo;s hunky husband, Sean (Glee&rsquo;s Blake Jenner). If you&rsquo;re thinking it sounds like a rip-off of the 1993 Demi Moore&ndash;Robert Redford movie Indecent Proposal, well, it is. And that&rsquo;s exactly the point. &ldquo;The whole tone of the season was designed to echo those late- &rsquo;80s, early-&rsquo;90s social thrillers,&rdquo; stresses Kelley, who even included a meta moment in the first episode that addresses the movie without actually naming it. &ldquo;We live in a world where Indecent Proposal existed. Anne identifies the most vulnerable way she can strike at Lisa and Sean. She acknowledges this isn&rsquo;t her original idea, but it sure is a good one, so let&rsquo;s see how far she can take it. That&rsquo;s to show the audience that I know what I&rsquo;m doing here.&rdquo; But don&rsquo;t assume that Anne, like Redford&rsquo;s character, is only in it for the pretty face. This isn&rsquo;t a sliding-door show. It&rsquo;s more of a consequence show. I don&rsquo;t think there is a culture out there that doesn&rsquo;t understand the &lsquo;what ifs&rsquo; in the world. What I really did was pitch another high-octane, emotional drama that&rsquo;s got a lot of the Revenge DNA but lies in single-season stories. (She did, however, voice the character of Tammi Duvall for Fox&rsquo;s King of the Hill.) And to show she was all in, Zellweger played a big role in making Anne look like the absolute control freak she appears to be on screen. In addition to donning a wardrobe of luxurious silks that drape perfectly off of her diminutive physique, the actress modeled her haircut after Bancroft&rsquo;s shoulder-length bob from The Graduate. If that&rsquo;s not intimidating enough, Zellweger also channels her inner Katniss Everdeen by masterfully using a bow and arrow in episode 2. &ldquo;She&rsquo;s pretty meticulous in her presentation,&rdquo; Zellweger says gleefully of her character. &ldquo;Boy, was that fun.&rdquo; So was the idea of creating a character who should continue to surprise viewers. Remember how Redford&rsquo;s character turned out to be a really nice guy at the end of Indecent Proposal? Yeah, don&rsquo;t necessarily expect a finale like that. Warns Zellweger: &ldquo;What if Anne is not misunderstood?&rdquo;
