Both delivered soft numbers despite having decent timeslots and plenty of promotion. So perhaps Sliders: 2020, The Ally McBeal Files, and ER2 might not happen after all?FRIDAYS AREN&rsquo;T DEADFox stunned the industry (and even itself) with the seventh-season premiere of Last Man Standing&mdash;which it rescued from ABC&rsquo;s cancellation ax&mdash;becoming the network&rsquo;s most-watched comedy in nearly seven years. Did Tim Allen scoop up Roseanne&rsquo;s conservative-audience leftovers? Did the network-swapping publicity help? In any case, LMS sure boosted Fox&rsquo;s launch of The Cool Kids: If you had told Fox&rsquo;s rivals that premiere week&rsquo;s top new comedy in the key demo would be a retirement-home sitcom airing Fridays at 8:30 p.m., they&rsquo;d have laughed at you (and then cried).HOPE REMAINSSome of the buzziest titles are yet to come. EW critics call ABC&rsquo;s Nathan Fillion cop drama The Rookie one of the fall&rsquo;s best new shows. The Roseanne spin-off The Conners needs only half of its predecessor&rsquo;s audience to be a hit (and industry research suggests that&rsquo;s precisely what it will get). And The CW&rsquo;s reboot of Charmed actually looks promising&mdash;yes, we just slammed reboots, but that was a whole two paragraphs ago.
