Boy Meets World's Danielle Fishel - My Baby's Health Crisis

When Danielle Fishel’s water broke 32 days before her due date, she wasn’t too worried about it—mostly just excited that she’d soon be meeting her first child, a boy named Adler. “I thought he may have to be in the NICU for few days, but he’s not that premature.

How bad could it be?” says Fishel, who starred on the hit ’90s sitcom Boy Meets World. Instead, Fishel, 38, and her husband, morning-radio host and TV producer Jensen Karp, 39, soon learned their baby had fluid around his lungs and would have to be closely monitored in the NICU after he arrived. “It was the worst night of my life,” Fishel says of discovering her baby was at risk for severe complications. Adler spent 12 days in the NICU and appeared to be getting better—but then the fluid tripled, and the newborn was rushed to a children’s hospital. His diagnosis: chylothorax, a rare condition in which lymphatic fluid leaks between the lungs and chest wall. Fishel and Karp spent as much time with him as they could. “We slept up against the wall on a cot,” saysFishel. Eventually, with the help of a special formula made for babies with chylothorax, the leak healed itself (“Jensen joked that babies are like Wolverine,” says Fishel), and Adler was discharged 21 days after he was born. Now the new parents are home and happily settled into a routine of sleepless nights and days adoring their bouncing 2-month-old. “He’s giving us lots of smiles,” Fishel says. “We’re trying to soak up these seconds with him because it does go by so fast.”
