When Brad Pitt, 55, arrived at the Excelsior Hotel via boat for the Venice Film Festival on Aug. 28, he had a huge smile on his face as he stepped on the pier and waved to the fans waiting to catch a glimpse of him.

“He was in a great mood and seemed very relaxed,” says a source. “You can tell he loved being there.” It’s been a whirlwind summer for the dad to Maddox, 18, Pax, 15, Zahara, 14, Shiloh, 13, and 11-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox. After winning Oscar buzz alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in July’s Once Upon a Time . . . in Hollywood, he jumped right into promoting his new space thriller Ad Astra. After lying low for the better part of three years following his 2016 breakup with Angelina Jolie, 44 (the two are still negotiating terms of their divorce), Pitt is in good spirits— and his career is on fire. “He isn’t getting much rest, but he is thriving on being busy,” says a source. Pitt is particularly proud of his latest project, in which he plays an astronaut on a mission to find his father. With its mix of deep emotion and difficult zero-gravity stunts, “Ad Astra was very intense for Brad. It took a lot of preparation, and the filming was very challenging. It was very different from what he has done in the past,” says the source.

Back in the U.S. on Sept. 1, Pitt made a surprise appearance at Kanye West’s Sunday Service spiritual concert in Watts, Calif. “Kanye and Brad have been friendly for a while.
