How these 26-year-old deejaying sisters turned a hobby into an enviable career.

After playing around on their friend’s turntables in 2014,Angel and Dren Coleman (above from left) discovered a passion for spinning. Today the up-and-comers are one of the hottest DJ duos in the country. Dren left her position as a sales planner at iHeartMedia to pursue their new interest, while Angel still juggles a full-time job in digital marketing at the Apollo Theater with late-night gigs. Here they share why they’re marching to their own beat.

ESSENCE: When you graduated from Dartmouth College, did you have any idea you’d end up here?

DREN: College teaches you how to think and problem-solve, but it doesn’t necessarily tell you if you’ll love a sales planning role at a media company. I’m the kind of person who has to be passionate and challenged by the work I do.

ANGEL: Music is my passion, and the Apollo is a pillar in that space. Even if we had never become DJs,I know that music would still be significant.
