<p>Even when I was a kid, the stories that interested me the most revolved around adventure and wilderness&mdash; like the ones about Amelia Earhart and Margaret Mead, two women who were always traveling to far-flung locales. When I was older and on the show Felicity, I found myself working really long 17- or 18-hour days, doing 22 episodes a year with not a lot of free time, so I put a fantasy-dream-escape picture of the beautiful mountains of Alaska on the front of my script binder. I used to look at the photo and think, &ldquo;If I save all my money, one day I&rsquo;m going to take an amazing trip there.&rdquo; And about 20 years later I finally got the chance when the Sierra Club invited me to go with them to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in northeastern Alaska. What&rsquo;s incredible about the region is that it&rsquo;s one of the last places on earth that&rsquo;s truly wild, where brown bears, arctic foxes, and herds of porcupine caribou roam free. Because only a few hundred people visit the remote refuge per year, the environment stays protected. Once you&rsquo;re there it&rsquo;s just you and the land. There is no cell service, no noise, and no alcohol, which, I admit, by Day 6 I thought was a little dire. But it&rsquo;s crazy how quickly everything else falls away once you&rsquo;re in nature. I love that the connection feels bigger than me. It&rsquo;s almost like when the world gets quieter, I get louder. During the days we&rsquo;d paddle along the river and go toward the Arctic until it was justice. Since it stayed light practically all the time, we&rsquo;d take these wonderful midnight hikes when the sky was that perfect dusk color, and then we&rsquo;d pitch our tents in fields of wildflowers. It was an incredible adventure and definitely a full-circle moment for me. I found my happy place in nature, and for that I couldn&rsquo;t be more grateful.</p>
