I was skipping around the blacktop at school by myself, and my P.E. teacher said, &ldquo;Why aren&rsquo;t you playing the game [with the other kids]?&rdquo; I said, &ldquo;Well, I&rsquo;m not going to play the game because, Ms. Wright, I&rsquo;m going to be Dolly Parton when I grow up.&rdquo; You were such a big inspiration to me. I loved country music, and I thought you stood for so many things. You were a beautiful storyteller. And you made me feel proud about being from a place that other people made fun of. I wanted to be like you&mdash;and I still do.DOLLY PARTON: Oh, that&rsquo;s sweet of you to say. Is singing something you want to do more of? You did such a good job in Walk the Line.&nbsp;RW: It&rsquo;s fun in movies, but I&rsquo;m not brave enough to do that.&nbsp;DP: You could duet with me.&nbsp;RW: Oh my gosh, well, I&rsquo;d do anything you wanted me to do. You never want to look stupid or foolish in front of other people. In the early days, not that many women were active in the entertainment business, but men never intimidated me because I had six brothers, my dad, my uncles, and so forth. I learned early on that people can be bull donkeys if you let them. You&rsquo;ve got to stand your ground and know who you are. I&rsquo;ve let a lot of good deals go by because I was not willing to sacrifice my integrity or my values or my principles. You have to keep your antennae out.RW: For sure. I&rsquo;ve learned, particularly when you&rsquo;re in a business for a long time, you need to treat people the way realized that life is too short to spend my time with anybody who doesn&rsquo;t appreciate me, treat me with respect, or bring value to the relationship. I&rsquo;m much more confident now, and I feel like I have the ability to say, &ldquo;Nope, I don&rsquo;t want to work with that person.&rdquo;DP: Right. I&rsquo;m not the kind of person who can work around ill-thinking, ill-willed people who make everybody else feel bad. I love my work, I love to have a good time, but I will tell you where to put it if I don&rsquo;t like where you&rsquo;ve got it. I don&rsquo;t like to do that. I don&rsquo;t lose my temper, but I often have to use it.RW: Yeah, I lose my temper only about once a year, but when I do, they usually deserve it. Really deserve it.DP: If I get mad, it&rsquo;s because you&rsquo;ve really done something bad. I want to be happy; I want things to go good. But I&rsquo;m a businesswoman; I&rsquo;m not going to let you run over me. So I stand firm for what I believe in and what I will and won&rsquo;t allow. You have to do that or you&rsquo;re never going to get anywhere in business, but you don&rsquo;t have to be a jerk. We don&rsquo;t have to be called bitches to be strong. So &hellip; the last time we talked, you said you were looking for a house in Nashville. Especially in the country-music business it says, &ldquo;I made it.&rdquo; I actually bought one before I made enough money to pay for it, but I paid on it. It made me look like a bigger star than I was at the time. There&rsquo;s something classy about that sort of thing. It&rsquo;s something Southern girls fancied themselves glamorous in. We were down there last week, and I took my daughter with me to open it.DP: I can&rsquo;t believe you have a daughter old enough to go shopping with. She&rsquo;s beautiful. It&rsquo;s always more fun to do projects with other people you respect. Nicole lives in Nashville, so we had a lot of time to connect. She&rsquo;s so smart and talented. It&rsquo;s about five women, and it all centers around a murder in a kindergarten classroom. You don&rsquo;t know which one of us did it. Each character is not all good or bad. I cried three times when I saw it the other day.DP: I have these little grandnieces and -nephews, and I love to take them to matin&eacute;es in Nashville, so we&rsquo;ll definitely go see it.RW: They&rsquo;ll love it, Dolly.
