Guwahati's European Club

Established in 1894, Guwahati Club used to be known as The European Club

Guwahati's European Club

Back when India was still under the rule of the British, many British planters were settled in the tea gardens scattered across Assam. During the 18th and 19th century, they introduced club culture so that all planters could get together for refreshment and recreational activities, from time to time. Although the planters left around the time of Independence, the club culture remained and was embraced by the people of the State. Even now, the bigger cities and towns across Assam have at least one club where likeminded people meet for events and get-togethers. One club established in Guwahati, back in 1894, stands tall even today. Initially named The European Club, it is widely known by its new name, Guwahati Club.

A comfortable space offering great service, it is a place to reminisce about old memories and make new ones. Located in the heart of Guwahati, the old heritage club has a homely and relaxed feel, even though the neighbourhood hums with daily activity. It is sort of a retreat where members can escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

MUSINGS OF A SOLDIER: TIT-BITS

People often ask me about my life out of uniform. Honestly, I have had no problems. Not so far. Instead, I find it quite refreshing. No routine, no parades, no briefing, no impending operations. Having donned the uniform since the age of thirteen until I hung up my boots last year, could I ever visualize life out of uniform? Not really. But, as I said, the transition has been quite smooth–no hang-overs, no regrets. People have been very positive in their interactions. Government departments have been responsive whenever I have approached for assistance. The genuine respect for the uniform is quite evident and it makes my heart swell with pride. Arunachal, to that extent, is the most nationalistic state in the country, I daresay. It has been kind of a revelation for me to experience the freedom of being a common man in an environment of positivity!
