Not too long ago, things in Indian cricket looked pretty murky. When Anil Kumble had stepped down as the coach of the Indian team last year, the move was met with a lot of suspicion. Things became worse when Kumble went on record to say that “the captain (Virat Kohli) had reservations with my style and about my continuing as head coach”. This led to outrage among fans and then as Ravi Shastri was brought in as the next man for the high-profile job, people saw it as a move to provide Kohli a “Yes Man”.
Hence, even before Shastri, who had been the director of the Indian men’s cricket team from August 2014 to April 2016, had begun his term, he was being castigated. People disregarded his wealth of experience, both as player and as coach, and suddenly Shastri was being mocked and ridiculed all over social media.
