Sports biopics are very much the flavor of the season as far as the movie scene in the country is concerned. And what’s more they seem to have struck a chord with the film going public. From faring moderately at the box office to being a runaway hit all of them have done well enough for movie makers to maintain the trend and churn out more and more biopics of sports personalities. Already there is serious talk of movies being made on the lives of Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh, Saina Nehwal and Sania Mirza.

Casting these movies right is the most important thing. The script as we have seen in the movies released so far could be far removed from reality. Screen writers are known to take liberty with history and numerous movies have been riddled with inaccuracies and sports biopics are no exception. Perhaps it would be wrong to expect an accurate account of the protagonist given that he or she might have been involved in major controversies and even scandals and having obtained permission to make the film movie makers would be most reluctant to show them in poor light. So in almost cases the well known sports personality is shown to be almost squeaky clean and the controversies are either ignored or presented in such a manner as to exonerate the protagonist.

Not that the movie going public by and large is bothered by the script’s inaccuracies going by the success of the films. Yes, critics have not hesitated to point out the film’s flaws but the public who enters the cine plex primarily looking for relaxation and to cheer for their hero or heroine as they are portrayed on celluloid is happy with a couple of hours “time pass’’ entertainment.
