Hope After Hurricane Harvey
Big Issue|Issue 258

The recent surge of hurricanes in the United States and beyond has had a devastating impact on human life, but often overlooked are the pets and animal companions caught up in the natural disasters. Thanks to a rescue organisation in Tennessee, stranded pets are finally being rehomed.

Hope After Hurricane Harvey

Thousands in the United States are still without shelter after Hurricane Harvey passed through Texas and Louisiana. The focused recovery efforts will last for weeks to come, but many of those abandoned and left homeless during the storm are perhaps the least expected: pets.

Thanks to the efforts of Animal Rescue Corps (ARC), a national animal rescue group working in the area, 156 pets were saved in the aftermath of the hurricane. “We have hundreds of volunteers helping,” says Michael Cunningham, Public Information Officer for ARC. “We generally have 20 to 25 volunteers per shift daily.”
