THE UNCONSCIONABLY HIGH public health costs directly attributable to automotive – particularly diesel exhaust-related pollution – has brought a greater focus to environmentally sustainable mass transport technology and led to a closer examination of the potential for the use of electric buses in urban mass transport. Building a significant renewable energy generation base, which is a prerequisite for the ‘real’ success of environmental benefitfocused e-mobility in the Indian context, has also gathered significant momentum.

The favourable traction characteristics of electric motors make them eminently suitable to power urban bus fleets which are generally required to operate with a wide range of torque and speed capabilities. Electric traction allows overloading, without compromising on either higher acceleration or on vehicle performance on gradients. Electric braking is known to reduce the load and wear of friction elements of the braking system, in turn reducing both vehicle maintenance requirements and costs – and substantially prolonging overall vehicle life.

Passenger comfort is also a big winner given the exceptionally low Noise Vibration Harshness (NVH) characteristics of such vehicles. Despite such obvious advantages, and an extremely liberal subsidy scheme unveiled by the government, the electric bus (e-bus) revolution is, unfortunately, yet to take firm roots in India.
