To step into the world of Italian architect and designer Teresa Sapey is to step into a world of colour and wonder. Her idiosyncratic designs contain within them layers of inspiration, referencing history and art as well as the emotive and sculptural power of colour.
When asked about the current focus of her design practice, Sapey responds: “Keep surprising, always!” Indeed, her projects are full of surprises, from anthropomorphic taps to celebrated car parks and immersive hotel spaces; Sapey designs across disciplines and sectors, always with the intention of creating an emotional response. When discussing the id Design Awards, Sapey says she is hoping to discover the same impact in the designs submitted for this year’s competition, stating: “I would say that I would like to see something that moves me as a person and designer.”
After studying architecture at the Polytechnic University of Turin, followed by a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Parsons School of Design and a master’s degree at Paris-La Villette, Sapey established her own architecture studio in Madrid in 1990. Having worked in the field for three decades, she is now an authority on design and has taught at Universidad Camilo José Cela in Madrid; McGill University in Montreal; Carleton University in Ottawa; Domus Academy in Milan and the University of Waterloo in Ontario. Sapey has received many international awards for her work and has been honoured by the Italian government with the title of Knight of the Italian Republic.
