Dubai Debut

Identity and Gaggenau are hosting a special showroom event this December featuring Sérgio Mendes’ new collection of furnishings, Interlude. The much-anticipated first collection from the Dubai-based designer was launched at this year’s Downtown Editions. Mendes is known for his creations for Ginger & Jagger and Munna, and so the warm reception to his new collection came as no surprise. The generous new Dubai resident took a short break from his design work to answer some questions.

What influenced your design philosophy?

I’m very curious about how things are made. Every small thing in my day contributes to my design philosophy. Nowadays the internet plays a big role in quenching my thirst for knowledge. It’s an endless source of inspirations - cultural, historical, musical. It’s in constant evolution. Perhaps being an empath is one of the virtues that characterises me the most. Being able to adapt simultaneously to different realities makes my perception of things easier.

How has Dubai impacted your design thinking?
