Towards Smart Cities

The new requirements for cities.

Towards Smart Cities

About 90% of urban growth is happening in developing countries like Malaysia - the largest wave we are experiencing yet. As cities grow, the way we build and manage urban infrastructure will only become more critical to global economic and social development.

To unleash the full potential of urbanisation, there are challenges that we need to tackle, such as energy reliability, air and water quality, traffic management and efficiency of public transportation. Governments have started investing in digital technologies as part of “Smart City” initiatives.

The goal is to create cities that deploy transformative solutions and technologies to increase operational efficiency and improve the overall quality of both government services and citizen welfare.

In order for a city to be “smart”, it needs to be able to process and analyse information that can be leveraged upon to improve urban living conditions. This information stems from the massive amounts of data generated by connected devices and sensors.

For instance, with public transportation, the use of Touch ‘n Go cards or plastic tokens yields data that can be analysed to identify peak hours, enabling service providers to adjust the volume and frequency of trains and buses. In unlocking the potential of a fully-digital, information-enabled platform, we can meet the world’s present and future sustainable development.

RELIABLE ENERGY FOR EVERYONE

Smart City initiatives would include aspects like Waste Management, E-Governance and Citizen Services, Water Management, Urban Mobility and Energy Management. Connected devices run on electricity, rendering for a steady and reliable supply of energy. Without that, the concept of smart cities cannot take form.
