The nets are commonly used in Southern China and IndoChina and were believed to have been introduced in India by the Chinese explorer Zheng He around 1350 to 1450.The Cheena-vala is a huge fishing net that spreads about 20 meters wide. It is fixed to long bamboo poles that are attached to a teak pole. One end of the teak pole is tied to a rope which has rocks tied to it for balance. The entire apparatus is fixed to the shore with only the bamboo poles suspended mid air along the coast.When the fishermen are ready to haul in the fishes, they pull at the rope which has the rocks tied to it. The rope in turn lifts up the bamboo poles which reel in the fishing net from under the water. Six fishermen work at the Cheena-vala which requires a lot of precision and balance to pull in the huge net from under the water.When the net is ready to be cast, one of the fishermen walks upon the suspended teak pole that is attached to the bamboo poles. The weight of the fisherman helps the bamboo poles to lean forward and send the fishing net into the water.The fishing net is cast only for a few minutes and sometimes can haul in a lot of fishes and sometimes just a few. The Cheena-vala are operated very frequently and the fishes are sold immediately to passersby.Cheena-vala are a major tourist attraction in Kerala.
