Beyond Journalists' Murders

Death of one man in Delhi or in Mumbai is equivalent to the death of 20 men in other corners of India

The above statement was made by one of the most celebrated journalists of the country at a meeting held here in Guwahati, while he was recalling his struggling days as a journalist, during an interaction with the public. And this statement, I strongly believe, is raw truth!

Case Study

Date was September 5, 2017. A senior journalist-cum-activist of Bangalore, Gauri Lankesh, was shot dead my unknown assailants and it made a national headline. People in the virtual world took to their Facebook walls and Twitter handles to condemn the killing.

The entire nation plunged into a state of grief and questions were raised about the safety of journalists. Fingers were also pointed at the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) and the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) for it was alleged by a few that these two organisations were ‘responsible’ for Lankesh’s murder. Lankesh’s most articles questioned the policies and working styles of the BJP and the RSS.

Whatever may be the reason(s) behind Lankesh’s killing, her death, however, created a tsunami in the Indian media world and it received an unprecedented coverage- not just in the ‘mainstream’ media but also in the Northeast’s regional media.
