Rear admiral S Ramsagar of Indian Navy considers him lucky to have survived the Indo-Pak War (1970), 46 years ago, When he fought the Pakistani army was awarded Vir Chakra. The War veteran, Who Joined the navy in 1959, Was awarded ativishista seva, Nau Sena medals for exemplary services to the nation. Ramsagar Who served as a former military secretary to the President of India, recounts how the Indian navy fought against Pakistani forces in Bangladesh liberation War to M P Saravanan.
How was the war scene during the Indo-Pak War (1971)?
When the Indo-Pak war (1971) started, INS Vikrant and other war ships were moved from Andaman Islands towards East Pakistan (Bangladesh) to launch an attack over Pakistani forces. Being Lt. Commander and senior pilot of Alize squadron, a day and night, anti-submarine war plane, I carried out bombing in Dhaka, Chittagong and many airfields despite heavy firing from the enemy. Unable to face our initial attacks many Pakistani aircrafts withdrew, and we were able to launch a frontal attack on the bases. Apart from this, fleet commander Admiral Sharma directed thorough raids in the Western side of East Pakistan and during the raids; I saw troops in five ships waiting evacuation in Kurna River towards Dhaka (capital of Bangladesh). Since there weren’t any bombs, I dropped rockets and depth chargers. As they couldn’t make any impact, I returned to INS Vikrant to report on the incident and troops movement. But the Commanding officer instructed me to attack once again. Loaded with heavy bombs we flew at 2 am in the morning and when dropping was finished, we noticed a warship, which started firing its anti-aircraft guns. Bullet traces began going with high speed. Since our planes have only 200 miles/hr speed, we decided to move back. In the morning, Hawk warplanes carried out the attacks on the harbour. Later ships and soldiers surrendered to the Indian Navy. During the war, we heard that the US Navy was on its way to India and they had crossed South China sea to enter near Singapore straits. So I had ordered to see the arrival of the ships through the seas, since our planes had radar sensing, electronic counter system. But I couldn’t find any ships from US Navy.
