When she watched the epic 1990 film Dances With Wolves, Sarah-Jane Dunford swooned with every other woman over Kevin Costner’s rugged good looks, but it was the majestic herd of 3500 bison thundering across the plain in the hit movie that made a lasting impression.
That childhood obsession has become a real-life profession, with the workplace safety specialist, 41, and her landscaper husband Luke now the proud owners of a growing herd of American bison – or buffalo, as they are known in the US and Canada.
Sarah-Jane lovingly refers to the bison she and Luke, 40, are raising on their Hunter Valley property as her “fluffballs”, but she says it’s important to never forget how dangerous and unpredictable they can be.
