When everything’s settled down again, discover the beautiful north of this lush, green country

Picture-perfect PORTUGAL

Fly to Portugal and you travel just two hours to another world, one that is bursting with history and stunning vistas, plus fine fish and wonderful wine – this area is well known for its aromatic wines. I went for a long weekend but could have stayed two weeks taking it all in, with activities to suit the culture vulture and the seaside lover alike.

Settling in

Arriving at Porto airport, we went straight into town, which is bursting with colourful squares, the wonderfully mosaic-laden Sao Bento train station and the very special Lello book store. This Gothic creation is apparently the inspiration for JK Rowling’s Harry Potter books (she lived here for three years), and you can see why. With its huge swerving wooden staircases showcasing books in every language, and a roped off room full of special editions, it’s a book lover’s paradise.
