Did you know that tanning is the body’s defense mechanism to reduce UV penetration into your skin cells? Exposure to sunlight causes skin to kick into protection mode and produce a pigment called melanin. The skin uses this pigment as an umbrella and piles it at the top layer to prevent further penetration of UV rays. This piling of the pigment on the outermost layer is what we call a tan. The longer you stay out in the sun, the more pigment ‘shields’ are formed on your skin, and the darker your tan gets.
