It’s now time to bid farewell to the third industrial revolution. The manufacturing sector is well poised to welcome the fourth one, also called Industry 4.0. IT has a key role to play here because it resolves a lot of shortcomings leftover from the previous industrial revolution.
To do a quick recap, the first industrial revolution started around 1780s where we learnt to harness the power of water steam power, giving rise to mechanical production and steam engines. The second industrial revolution started 30 years later as electricity came in. This introduced us to the concept of mass production and was popularised by Henry Ford’s assembly line, which made expensive products like cars affordable for the masses.
