Video games are obsessed with lore, but lots of world building doesn’t equal great storytelling, argues Rick Lane.
When I reviewed Gears of War 4 last month, I looked up the game’s online Wiki to do a spot of fact checking about the story’s central faction. I figured it would be straightforward, since Gears of War 4’s story is about as complicated as an episode of Timmy Time. I was wrong. It took me half an hour to find what I was seeking, because the Wiki entry for the COG (Coalition of Ordered Governments) is12,000 words long.Twelve thousand words! That’s longer than my under graduate dissertation. And that’s just for the COG. There’s probably enough information on Marcus Fenix to fill a trilogy of novels.
