NEXT-LEVEL APPS
Last month, Apple sent out invites for an exclusive media event to be held on December 2 in New York City. At the time, journalists were speculating whether the Mac Pro and other new devices would be unveiled on the day, but it soon became clear that Tim Cook was ready to take a new approach to honor the top apps of the year. It’s a tradition for the Cupertino company to compile a list of the most downloaded apps and games in December, but as Apple looks to improve its relationship with developers, an awards ceremony seemed fitting.
There was little fanfare over the event and relatively no information from insiders, but it was an opportunity for the company to reveal the best apps and games of the year, apps Apple says “drove app culture.” The firm was keen to place emphasis on apps that help to simplify our lives, express our creativity and connect us to friends, family, and the world around us.
With the App Store, Apple has transformed the way we work, connect, learn, and play, and allowed developers to reach people around the world. The App Store has delivered more than $120 billion in revenue for developers to date, and today the App Store is the fastest and most vibrant App marketplace in the world, attracting half a billion users every week.
