Sonny Sets Sights On Old Foes

Heung-Min Son has already made Champions League history here at our new stadium. Now he’s after another, more personal milestone against Bayern Munich as he renews acquaintances with a Bundesliga heavyweight he knows only too well on the return of European football’s most prestigious competition to N17 this evening.

‘Sonny’ carved his name into Spurs folklore in April when he scored the first goal at our world-class venue against Crystal Palace in the Premier League and followed up by hitting the first Champions League goal here against Manchester City. It was a purple patch for the South Korean star that continued with two goals in the second leg to see us through at the Etihad and continue our path to the final in Madrid.

“Sometimes I can’t even begin to think about the fact I actually scored the first goal ever at the new stadium,” Sonny reflected. “You almost don’t realise the significance of it because it is so special. And then to score the first Champions League goal as well… I still have these memories in my head, they are unbelievable. I’m so proud, so happy.”

We’re back on the Champions League path again this evening with Matchday Two of Group B, and a club first – having played Bayern Munich in successive seasons in the Cup Winners’ Cup and UEFA Cup back in the 1980s, this is our first Champions League encounter against the giants from Bavaria.

German champions 29 times – including a current run of seven on the trot – Bayern Munich have won the European Cup/Champions League on five occasions. Their last triumph in this competition was in 2013, just down the road at Wembley Stadium when they beat German rivals Borussia Dortmund, and that is a team Sonny remembers only too well.
