What do I need to know about microbial mitigation?
Divers can get preoccupied with hazards, and they’re not wrong to do so. Currents, running out of air, losing a buddy—there’s plenty to plan for. One thing that doesn’t typically rank high on the list of concerns is local sources of infection. Most microbes we encounter while diving are harmless—but not all. Pollution and microbial hazards are at their greatest concentrations in the coastal waters divers explore, and increased global warming and acidification have increased their distribution.
