JUST OVER THE UTAH BORDER WE’D FIND THE WEST’S LAST STAND FOR 2020
FALL CLASSIC NATIONALS

Racing in the West has been challenging, to say the least, in 2020. With shutdowns happening left and right, no one knew if or when the national series would be able to reestablish west of the Rockies.

Enter Grand Valley BMX. If that name sounds familiar to you it should. This facility hosted the North American Supercross series back in 2015, 2016, and 2017. The last race ended with some crazy winds that sent a few tents airborn but with this race happening so much later in the season, none of those issues would pop up. With temps in the low 80’s we couldn’t have asked for a better setting for the last shootout in the west.

The track was rebuilt back in February and features one of the most technical rhythm sections on the national circuit. Some loved it, some feared it, but everyone had to navigate it. Many a race were won or lost on that third straight.

With this being the last points chance for a lot of folks in the West, classes were chocked full of talent. Nine expert had quarters on days one and two (along with 9-10 open on Friday) and 10,11, and 17-20X had them all three days. There were keeper scores on the line and racers in contention knew it and laid it on the line to get them.

J&R’s Easton Johnson kicked things off on Friday by grabbing a 9X win and would repeat it on Sunday. Full Tilt’s Cohen James would out crank Johnson’s teammate, Lian Auyon, down the final straight and get the win in the class on Saturday.

When you roll into the local Quiktrip and one of Tucson’s finest looks at your shirt and asks if you know Corben Sharrah, you can only be in one city in America. Often coined as the loudest city in BMX, it doesn’t matter if there is a single fan or a gaggle of Tucsonans, they know how to bring the energy.
