As he prepares to enter his fourth season as 9ers head coach, Kyle Shanahan already is one of just four coaches in the 75-year history of the San Francisco franchise to win an NFC championship and take the 49ers all the way to the Super Bowl. hat accomplishment alone vaults him among a select group of top coaches ever to guide the team, and if his 2019 performance and recent contract extension are any indications, Shanahan surely will e moving up in the future on this list of the bestead coaches in 49ers history.
1 Bill Walsh: It all starts here when talking about great 49ers coaches, and probably ends here as well with “The Genius” who reinvented football with his fabled West Coast Offense while building an NFL dynasty out of the rubble in San Francisco. After going 8-24 in his first two seasons while reconstructing the franchise from ground level, Walsh brought the 49ers their first Super Bowl title in his third season and spearheaded an incredible run through the 1980s that culminated with Walsh’s third Super Bowl title before he stepped down as a champion and everlasting NFL icon following the 1988 season.

By today’s standards, Warner’s performance last year was worth the money as he posted an Approximate Value of 19 — matching the highest score ever recorded by a San Francisco defender according to a Pro Football Reference formula that puts a single number on each player-season across all positions since 1960. Patrick Willis and NaVorro Bowman (twice) also had seasons with an AV of 19 as they dominate this list of the greatest individual seasons by a linebacker in 49ers history.
