CB Ahkello Witherspoon: After a dismal sophomore season last year during which he lost his starting job several times due to ineffectiveness, the third-year veteran came to training camp this summer with a marginal hold on his status as a regular. But after holding off all summer challenges to his position, Witherspoon has never looked better on the right corner. Using his size, length and improved anticipation in coverage, Witherspoon displayed the skills of a shutdown corner during San Francisco’s 2-0 start to the season, coming up with several fine plays in coverage to go along with his tough tackling in run support. Witherspoon was around the football often against both the Buccaneers and Bengals, knocking down five passes in coverage in the two games and returning an interception 25 yards for a touchdown to seal San Francisco’s Week 1 victory at Tampa Bay.
