As South Africa collapsed miserably on the fourth day of the second Test in Pune, it became obvious for a second time in suc-cession on this tour that Faf du Plessis is staring at an abysmal future with no immediate answers to his or the team’s current woes.
Graeme Smith made a telling comment on air about the body language of the current South African captain, batting in vain to avoid the inevitable in the second innings of the second Test. Faf’s usual style of mixing natural panache with well thought out defense was missing. Instead a more subdued, defensive Faf tried desperately at the crease to make sense of the team’s positioning in the match but also, overall in the larger context of things.
