On Tuesday April 7, 1891 the journal Sporting Life ran a one-paragraph story under the heading, ‘The London County Cycling and Athletic Club (Limited)’. “We are in receipt of the official programme of this newly formed association,” ran the introduction, “which states that the executive have secured ‘The most accessible track in London’ for wheelmen and athletes to disport themselves upon… Possibly the irrepressible and good old sportsman, George Lacey Hillier, has found a rara avis in the way of tracks — at last.” That “unrivalled” track was of course
