Beryl Burton winning time trials and breaking records was a fairly common news story in the 1960s, and so this issue led with her taking the National 100- mile time trial in a new record time of four hours, eight minutes and 22 seconds. This was almost 19 minutes clear of second-placed June Pitchford.
Bernard Thompson – a writer who covered the British scene for many years – seemed delighted to report that Burton’s time was quicker than the winning time in the men’s ‘100’, run two weeks earlier.
