Jake Fromm, likewise, was not expecting a call from the 716 area code.
“I really thought it was a prank call,” Fromm said after learning his NFL destination. “I thought my phone was broken.”
Fromm’s phone was fine — it just turned out that the Bills were the unlikely and unexpected suitor to end his free fall down the draft board. With the 167th overall pick, Buffalo selected the former Georgia standout, stating that his value was simply too good to pass up at that point.
“The board. Simple as the board,” Beane said. “I wouldn’t have told you going into today that he was on our radar, but we had him in a spot that you just can’t ignore and we gave him his due.”
Ironically, two years after selecting the most controversial rated passer in the draft in Josh Allen — and, in hindsight, appearing to hit a home run — the Bills ended up choosing the most controversial passer from this year’s draft. But Fromm’s draft stock tumbled for the exact opposite reason that Allen’s soared.
