Adjustable butt pads have been used by FT and HFT shooters for years and with good reason; if the rifle does not fit you, then positional shots will be more difficult, your head position on the stock is compromised and so parallax errors can creep in. The fact is, most shooters don’t expect the length of the stock to play such a crucial role in accuracy, but it undoubtedly does. Length of pull, or the distance from the trigger face to the butt of the rifle. is made to an average by all gun manufacturers, unless it’s made specifically for juniors. Ideally, big chaps like me need a longer length of pull, so I always fit an adjustable butt pad to all my rifles, if I can, even my plinking rifles, to give me a better head position and a longer length of pull. Don’t be fazed by fitting a butt pad to your hunting rifle, it’s really easy for anyone with rudimentary DIY skills, and they’re cheap – £18.99 for a Gun Tuff black adjustable.
