After 32 years in children’s ministry within the local church, Tina is now the senior publications director for KidzMatter and executive editor of KidzMatter Magazine where she oversees the content of the magazine and develops curriculum products. She loves being able to train volunteers and professionals who have a heart for seeing kids become disciples of Jesus, whether that is through writing curriculum, writing idea books for Warner Press, or being able to speak at conferences. Tina has authored several books including, “Unwrapping the Servant: Teaching Kids to serve Jesus and Others.”
For an assignment in my Masters of Education course, I was challenged to create a new program for kids where I could map the changes that occurred during the time it ran (I had permission from this state university to tweak all my courses toward children’s ministry). What I came up with was a six-week course called Unwrapped, which focused solely on helping kids see their ability to be servants of Jesus, no matter how old they are. Beyond a doubt, it was the most life-changing, eye-opening, heart-awakening six weeks of my ministry life.
The group was made up of nine second graders. They signed a contract, as did their parents, agreeing to attend six sessions, which would run two and a half hours each Saturday morning. Our entire focus during that time was serving. I wasn’t teaching Bible skills, presenting a Bible story, or helping them memorize Scripture.
To evaluate any changes that happened in the kids, I conducted a pre-test and a post-test. These were identical tests, each containing the same 10 multiple-choice questions. In addition to the choices of answers, they were always given a blank space to write in their answer if they didn’t see it listed. These tests turned out to be incredibly revealing.
