Searching for a dream property by the sea? With lifestyle high on househunters’ list of priorities, Grandcamp-Maisy in Normandy is an ideal choice, says Steve Gillham

Seaside hideaway

The days spent at home during lockdown have made many of us consider our lifestyle, dreams and aspirations.

For those who have hankered after a seaside home in France, Calvados is an ideal place to consider. Not only a delicious digestif, Calvados is one of the five départements that make up the Normandy region.

Brits have enjoyed this area for many years, embracing the entente cordiale brought about by our joint wartime history. Locals are friendly and welcoming, and for Anglophones living in Normandy there are various organizations to join, whether you are a budding artist, book lover, keep fit fan, gourmet or military historian.

With easy transport links to and from the UK, it’s easy to reach too, with ferry ports at Cherbourg and Caen (Ouistreham) and flights to Dinard. A trip to Paris by train is approximately three hours, a little more by car.

BEACH RETREAT

Grandcamp-Maisy is a particularly good place to start a search for a seaside hideaway. There is plenty of choice from new-build to rebuild, part or full renovation, or immediately habitable. Choose between a townhouse in the heart of things or a larger property on the outskirts of this vibrant, small seaside town.
