One of the largely unspoken – but almost always followed – techniques in regular shooting is to keep the essential parts of a picture apart. I’m certainly not going to use the word ‘rule’, not so much because I don’t think rules have any place in any creative activity, but because no one with any sense actually thinks like that – ‘Oh, I have to do this or it’ll be a failure.’ There’s a big qualification here, as it depends very much on the type of scene you’re photographing, and it’s a technique that comes into play with busy scenes of a particular type.
