But there is a view within the government that before doing so, there is a need to put enough infrastructure in place for automatic mechanisms to test the fitness of old vehicles. In the current manual systems, there is enough room to manipulate the test results and hence the process gets defeated.The government is also working on the plan to hike the re-registration fee of old vehicles to discourage people from continuing to own them. Though the government has plans to roll out a voluntary vehicle scrapping policy to phase out old and polluting vehicles, it is yet to see the light of the day.
