It was believed that radiation therapy, referred to as X-ray therapy, helped reduce inflammation in lungs and prevent cytokines storm (severe immune reaction), thereby mitigating the severity of pneumonitis.
Since Covid-19 is known to cause pneumonia too, and there are no known cures for the viral illness yet, doctors at AIIMS are conducting a pilot study to assess whether radiation therapy can help reduce severity of symptoms. This has been confirmed by Dr Randeep Guleria, director of AIIMS.
Two Covid-19 patients, both in their 50s requiring oxygen support due to severe symptoms, have already undergone the therapy that involved administering very low dosage of radiation (70 cGy in a single fraction) to the patient’s lungs in a single sitting.
